BLOA Assessment Questions

The following questions could be asked in your exams and are in priority order according to what has come up most recently. In brackets and italics, I have told you a little about when it last came up and so on).

SAQs

  1. Explain one ethical consideration in research into genetic influences on behaviour (never seen before as an SAQ and only ever seen once as an ERQ in TZ1 in MAy 2011, this is a rare question and therefore may come up for that reason or there is some reason why they leave it out; i would be sure to practice it!)
  2. Describe one way in which genetic inheritance influences behaviour with reference to one research study (this works as a question and is top priority to practice as this LO has never been seen as an SAQ and not seen at all (i.e. as an ERQ) since Nov 2014 and Nov 1012, also in SAMs, never seen before in a May sitting)
  3. Describe how and why ONE research method is used at the biological level of analysis with reference to one research study (We have never seen an SAQ on BLOA Methods (except maybe Nov 2016) we don’t have this paper yet!)
  4. Describe the use of brain imaging technologies in investigating the relationship between biological factors and behavior with reference to one research study (never seen before as an SAQ)
  5. Describe one research study which relates to the interaction between cognition and physiology in terms of behaviour (another variation on the LO above, a legitimate question that has never come up)
  6. Describe one effect of the environment on physiological processes (this has never come up as an SAQ in TZ2, only ever in TZ1 in May 2014)
  7. Using an example, outline one effect of neurotransmission on behaviour (not seen since May 2013 and only once before that in Nov 2011, this LO requires you to know 2 neurotransmitters so be prepared for this but practice doing at least one of them for 8 marks as the question could be narrowed down to one requiring greater depth, if they ask for two you will need less depth)
  8. Explain ONE ethical consideration that relates to one research studies from the biological level of analysis (we have not seen an SAQ on BLOA ethics since Nov 2013)
  9. Describe one evolutionary explanation of one behaviour (only seen once as an SAQ but came up relatively recently in May 2015 both TZs)
  10. Describe one study related to localization of function in the brain (came up fairly recently in Nov 2015, had also appeared twice before (May 2013 (TZ1)  and May 2012 (TZ2) and also in the SAMs)
  11. Using an example, explain the function of one hormone in human behaviour (unlikely as came up in May 2016, again like neurotransmission, this LO requires you to know 2 hormones so be prepared for this but practice doing at least one of them for 8 marks as the question could be narrowed down to one requiring greater depth, if they ask for two you will need less depth, before 2011 it had come up only one but in both TZ1 and 2 in May 2011)
  12. Explain one principle that defines the biological level of analysis behaviour with reference to one research study (BLOA Principles is a very popular question and came up again in Nov 2016 as well as May 2014, twice in 2012, in May (TZ1) and November 2012)

ERQs

  1. Discuss ethical considerations related to research conducted into genetic influences on behaviour (Never seen before as an ERQ in TZ2 and only once ever in TZ1 in the very first set of exams in May 2011)
  2. Examine one evolutionary explanation of behaviour (never seen before as an ERQ in TZ2, unless in Nov 2016, seen in May 2014 ands May 2012 but only in TZ1)
  3. Discuss the use of brain imaging technology in investigating the relationship between biological factors and behaviour. (May 2015, TZ2 and Nov 2013 and MAy 2011)
  4. Discuss why two particular research methods are used at the biological level of analysis (May 2015 (TZ1), came up quite recently but BLOA methods is a very popular questions as an ERQ as it also came up in Nov 2014, May 2013 (TZ2) and Nov 2011 so don;t be surprised if it comes up again!)
  5. Discuss one or more effects of the environment on one or more physiological processes.(quite recent Nov 2015 and also TZ1 2013)
  6. Examine one interaction between cognition and physiology in terms of behaviour (this is unlikely as came up in May 2016 however the LO allows for some variations which they could chuck in to mix things up e.g. “Evaluate two relevant studies relating to the interaction between cognition and physiology in terms of behaviour” or “Compare two relevant studies relating to the interaction between cognition and physiology in terms of behaviour”, quite unlikely though as the LO has come up twice before this as well both in TZ2 in 2014 and 2012).
  7. Discuss two or more ethical considerations related to research studies at the biological level of analysis (May 2016)
  8. With reference to relevant research studies, to what extent does genetic inheritance influence behaviour? (last seen Nov 2016, and before that not seen since Nov 2014)
