New IB Paper 2

1 hour 30 minutes (Section A and B – do all questions, Section C – Choose one question). The paper is out of 35 so around 2.5 minutes per mark.

Section A

  • Assesses knowledge of research methodology with reference to the class practicals.
  • Four compulsory questions, Q. 1-2 are marked out of 4, Q. 3-4 are marked out of 6.
  • Q. 1 (4 marks) assesses knowledge and understanding of research methodology in relation to a specific class practical.
  • Q 2 (4 marks) assesses understanding of how a named CONCEPT can be applied to one of the class practicals.
  • Q. 3 assesses the ability to “compare and contrast” different research methods in relation to one of the class practicals (6 marks).
  • Q. 4 assesses the ability to “design” an investigation on the same topic as one of the class practicals (6 marks).

Exam advice

  • Spend about 10 minutes each on the two 4 mark responses (Q.1 and 2); your answer should be 200-250 words.
  • To score in the top band for Q.1 (3-4) answers must include;
    • Relevant and detailed knowledge of the research method used in the named class practical; appropriate and clear links to the practical;
    • accurate use of psychological terminology.
  • To score in the top band for Q.2 (3-4) answers must include;
    • Well developed knowledge and understanding of the named CONCEPT;
    • Clear and detailed links between the concept and the class practical.
  • To score in the top band for Q.3 (5-6) answers must include;
    • Detailed discussion of similarities and differences;
    • Effective use of relevant psychological terminology.
  • To score in the top band for Q.4 (3-4) answers must include;
    • Accurate and detailed explanation of the procedure of the research method;
    • Effective use of relevant psychological terminology.

Section B

  • An ERQ to assess critical thinking in application to a unseen research study extract;
  • The question/prompt will include four or more CONCEPTS and students will be required to refer to two or more of these in their discussion/evaluation.
  • The study in the extract may be experimental or non-experimental and will be linked to one of the four contexts.
  • Maximum mark is 15.

Exam advice

  • Spend about 40-45 minutes
  • Answers should be around 800-1000 words
  • To score in the top band (13-15) answers must include
    • A clear focus on the question
    • Fully explained RAD (Relevant, Accurate and Detailed) knowledge and understanding relating to at least two of the listed concepts in relation to the extrac/tsource.
    • Well developed critical analysis (e.g. PEEL)
    • Consistent and fully explained links between CONCEPTS and source material; specific and effective references to the study
    • A clearly stated conclusion that is consistent with the arguments presented (just like the EE)
    • Accurate and precise use of psychological terminology.
