SCLOA Assessment Questions

The following questions need to be practiced for your exams and are organised in priority order. I have listed why they are at their current position in the list in brackets and italics. I do not have access to the November 2016 paper yet and once I have that the position of questions may be subject to change. Remember these lists are a guideline only to help you make some decisions about which order to revise in and where to give that extra little push when you are not sure what section to look at next!


  1. Define the terms “culture” and “cultural norms” (has never been asked for ever!)
  2. Describe one ethical consideration with reference to one research study at the socio-cultural level of analysis (a likely question as never seen before as an SAQ and only been up once before in TZ2 as an ERQ in Nov 2012 although was seen in TZ1 as ERQ in May 2015)
  3. Describe research into conformity to group norms (never seen as SAQ, only as ERQ Nov 2014 and May 2012)
  4. Describe one factor that influences conformity (never seen as an SAQ only ever ERQ as far as I can tell at the moment 2016, 2014 and 2011)
  5. Explain how and why one research method is used at the socio-cultural level of analysis (only seen as an SAQ once before and never in TZ2, quite a while back May 2012 TZ1)
  6. Using one or more examples, explain “emic” and “etic” concepts (only ever seen once in Nov 2012)
  7. Describe the role of one cultural dimensions on behaviour (only came up once as SAQ in May 2013)
  8. Describe one error of attribution (this has only ever come up as an  SAQ once as far as I can tell in May 2011 TZ1 however I need to check this against the real May 2016 paper and Nov 2016)
  9. Describe the use of one compliance technique (last seen Nov 2013)
  10. Explain the effect of stereotypes on behaviour (last seen May 2014)
  11. Outline social identity theory with reference to one relevant study. (last seen May 2015)
  12. Outline how one principle that defines the sociocultural level of analysis has been demonstrated in one example of research (theory or study). (Last seen Nov 2015, also May 2014 TZ1 only and May 2012 TZ2)
  13. Describe the role of situational and dispositional factors in explaining behaviour.(unlikely as seen in May 2016, previously May 2013 TZ1)
  14. Explain the formation of stereotypes (came up in May 2016 TZ2)
  15. Describe social learning theory, with reference to one research study (last seen Nov 2016 and Nov 2014)

  2. Evaluate social identity theory, making reference to relevant studies.(Last seen May 2013 and Nov 2011)
