Describing the Key Question:

In February 2016, the homelessness charity St Mungo’s produced a report called “Stop the Scandal: an investigation into mental health and rough sleeping” which showed that 4/10 rough sleepers have a mental health problem and that this is a growing problem.

The report shows that in London the number of people recorded as sleeping rough with an identified mental health support need has more than tripled over the last five years from 711 in 2009-10 to 2,342 in 2014-15.1

Many homeless people also have problems with substance abuse, using drugs and alcohol to self-medicate and to help them sleep and not feel the cold . In Oxford, 65 per cent of people sleeping rough with a mental health need also have a substance use need, compared to 27 per cent of those without a mental health need.

The report also indicates that “people can struggle to escape the street because mental health problems make it harder for them to engage with homelessness services”. The case of Brian (not his real name), who has schizophrenia, was given as an example; he failed to engage with homelessness services due to his delusional beliefs and anxieties about persecution.In the winter of 2013-14 Brian started sleeping on buses, making it harder for the people he relied on to find him.

78 per cent of the homelessness professionals who responded to St Mungo’s national survey said that in the last 12 months they had met at least one person sleeping rough who had recently been discharged from a mental health hospital.

  1. Describe one key question of relevance to society from clinical psychology (4)
  2. Using psychological concepts, theories and/or studies, explain one key question of relevance to society from clinical psychology (4)
  3. Discuss one one key question of relevance to society from clinical psychology (8)

Not seen 12 or 16 markers in clinical in the SAMs or June 2017 paper; you can’t have an evaluate 8 marker on key question as it would need marks allocated to AO1, 2 and 3 and there is no example of this in the LBMS. This means the only other available questions are 20 markers which can be marked 8 ao1, 4 ao2 and 8 ao3 and therefore could be used with a key question 🙂

4. Assess one one key question of relevance to society from clinical psychology (20)

5. To what extent can clinical psychology  explain one key question of relevance to society? (20) essay-planner-sheet-20 TWE;

It’s important to get the right balance of information about your key question, application of psychological knowledge and evaluation f this knowledge in order to reach a decision about whether clinical psychology has really understood this situation well; you will probably need to appeal to other disciplines in your conclusion including sociology, politics and economics which help to explain the social injustices that makes certain individuals and families more likely to become homeless, mentally unwell and/or substance users.
